MESSAGE FROM P&R DIRECTOR

Hello everyone,

This is always a bittersweet time of year for me with summer coming to an official end, the leaves starting to fall, and the days getting shorter. We closed the town pool last week which made me a little sad, as does the hissing sound of all the paddleboards as they were deflated for the season on Labor Day at the lake. But there is still so much to look forward to with the beauty of the changing colors, dahlia season, less humidity, and Halloween!

Hopefully by now you are back in the swing of school and your new routine. Things don’t slow down for us at Park and Rec when camp ends. We are busy planning our holiday events which will be here before we know it. I want to thank everyone who answered our survey regarding where our next coach bus trip should be. We posed a Mets game, Jets game, Yankees game, and the Radio City Rockettes. It was nearly a tie between the Yankees and the Rockettes, but after receiving some phone call inquiries about the Rockettes, we went ahead and got those tickets. These sold out quickly last year, so set yourself a reminder: registration will open October 1st. Our trip this year will be on the same day as last year, December 30th.

The countdown is on to the Southbury Celebration! We hope to see you there. It’s going to be a beautiful evening!

SUMMER COED ADULT SOFTBALL LEAGUE

Thank you to the teams who faced off twice a week all summer in Adult Coed Slow Pitch Softball at Community Park. All in all, around 200 participants played more than 30 games over the 12 week season. Several of the 9 teams boasted local businesses or organizations as sponsors. Even the umpires enjoy our league with one saying, "I can't get over the good sportsmanship in this league!" We are grateful to Tom Marks, John Demeyer, and all the other volunteers that make this relaxed, respectful, and still competitive league the success that it is!

FALL FEST AT PARKS AND RECREATION - October 10-16, 2026

Celebrate the season with our Fall Fest! Join Southbury Parks & Recreation October 10–16 for a week of fall-themed activities, community programs, contests, crafts and family fun.

Activities throughout the week include scarecrow building, pumpkin carving, community workshops, fall activities, contests, a sensory-friendly movie matinee and more! Fall Fest will also feature our Trick-or-Treat Costume Parade & Outdoor Movie Night on Thursday, October 15, featuring Toy Story 5, co-sponsored by the Southbury Public Library!

Select activities require advance registration and space is limited.

Programs are FREE for Southbury residents. A $5 fee applies to non-residents for select registered programs. Please see each individual activity for registration requirements, times and locations.

All are welcome to attend our Trick-or-Treat Costume Parade & Outdoor Movie Night—no registration required!

NEW FREE PROGRAM: Forward Together - A Cancer Survivor Walking Group

Join adult cancer survivors for weekly walks through scenic Platt Farm Reserve and on Main Street South in Southbury.

We'll begin with a getting to know you session inside the Parks and Recreation building, followed by 7 weeks of walking outdoors in the fresh fall air. All paces and abilities are welcome as you work on adding a little extra mileage each week. Routes will be on sidewalks, gravel farm roads, and dirt trails off Flood Bridge Rd as we watch the leaves come to life and learn from others' relatable experiences. Walks will be led by our Parks and Recreation Director, Meghan, who has 12 years of experience working with cancer survivors in an exercise setting.

NEW CLASS: Crochet Basics and Beyond

Discover your craft. Learn new crochet skills by mastering the classic granny square and diving into the many crafting options they provide.

Crocheted granny squares open a wide range of crafting options from simple shapes to functional, structured statement pieces. Designed specifically for beginning crocheters, this comprehensive workshop guides you through the entire process of constructing squares and picking a project that uses them.

You will learn the basics to create and assemble the squares. Join us for an engaging, hands-on session focused on technical skill-building, creative wellness, and community connection.

Better Babysitting Certification Course

Please welcome our new instructor, Danielle, for this accelerated babysitting certification course.

More than just a babysitting class! In this one-time, 2-hour hands-on course, participants will gain real-world experience using realistic infant and child dolls while learning the fundamentals of childcare and safety. Students will learn CPR awareness and response techniques (not CPR certification), emergency preparedness, age-appropriate activities, and professional babysitting skills that families value. Participants will leave with a Babysitting Certification, practical knowledge, and the confidence to become the sitter families call first.

Program will be held twice: each date is its own complete course, class meets at Southbury Parks and Recreation, 561 Main St South.

Half Day Adventures return this school year! We will be hosting a half day program on the following dates: 11/3, 11/4, 11/5, 12/2, 3/3, 3/17, 3/18, and 4/28. Vacation camps will be held in winter from 12/28-12/31 and in spring from 4/12-4/16
