The Town of Southbury is hiring an On-Call Assistant Animal Control Officer. Under the direction of the Animal Control Officer, the Assistant Animal Control Officer is accountable for the enforcement of all laws and regulations pertaining to the control and impoundment of domestic, companion and exotic animals as well as enforcement of animal cruelty laws. Performs field and office work and maintains the Town's Animal Shelter.
The Assistant ACO work schedule consists of on-call coverage for weekends, holidays, and scheduled leave time of the full-time Animal Control Officer. The pay rate is $20.00-$25.00 per hour. Minimum 3-hour on-call pay for each day scheduled to work. Includes use of Town vehicle when on call.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Responds to and investigates incoming calls/complaints regarding animal control issues in the Town and answers routine questions from the public.
- Performs daily patrols of Town parks, trails, and nature centers.
- Issues verbal warnings, written warnings, or infractions with reference to nuisance barking animal bites/attacks, unreasonable tethering or confining of a dog, validation of current rabies vaccinations, licensing laws, and leash law ordinance compliances, and any other law within the Animal Control Officer's jurisdiction.
- Investigates and quarantines domestic animals involved in bites and attacks on persons and
other animals.
- Provides proper daily care of stray domestic animals housed in the Town shelter.
- Prepares detailed reports of all incidents, animal bites, animal impoundments, complaints, and damages.
- Responsible for the care and maintenance of the Animal Control vehicle and related
equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- High School degree (or equivalent).
- Must have State of Connecticut Animal Control Officer Certificate or be willing to obtain certification within one year.
- Must be physically capable of capturing, controlling, and lifting large animals. Ability to deal with aggressive dogs and other animals as necessary.
- Must have knowledge of first aid for animals.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills both oral and written.
- Must maintain valid State of Connecticut driver's license.
