7/18/2022 - ROAD ALERT: Rehabilitation of Flood Bridge and Heritage Road Bridges

UPDATE - the work on both bridges will start earlier, now scheduled for Friday, July 22, 2022.

The Town of Southbury is announcing that construction on Flood Bridge Road and Heritage Road Bridges over the Pomperaug River will begin on or about on Friday, July 29, 2022. The project consists of the rehabilitation of both bridges including the bridge decks and repair work to the underside of the structures. Flood Bridge Road will be closed for the duration of construction whereas Heritage Road will be staged during construction, allowing partial use by motorists. Duration of the project is 3-months with an approximate opening of the bridges scheduled for October 27, 2022 or sooner.

Detour Info

August 2022 through October 2022, the contractor will close Flood Bridge Road and will implement a detour consisting of Flood Bridge Road, Library Road, South Britain Road and Main Street South. Motorist should follow posted signs for the detour route.

Heritage Road will be staged during construction allowing motorist full and partial use of the bridge during construction. Stage 1 will allow motorist to use the bridge to and from Heritage Village. Stage 2 will restrict motorist to one way into the Village only. A detour / alternate route, for vehicles leaving the Village will be in effect during Stage 2 using Heritage Road, North Poverty Road, Roxbury Road (Rte. 67) and Main Street North. Motorist should follow posted signs for the detour route.

About the project

The project consists of the rehabilitation of both Bridges, which span the Pomperaug River. The project includes rehabilitating the existing superstructure including a new bituminous concrete surface and expansion joints and repairs to the concrete structure below. This repair work will extend the life of both structures approximately 20+-years. The golf cart path, that is below the Heritage Road Bridge will be protected and remain open to golfers for the duration of the project. The final roadway configuration on the rehabilitated bridges will remain the same as existing.

Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving along any detour route.
