Southbury Grocery Brigade Ends

As re-openings throughout the area have occurred, there was a challenge with dwindling volunteer availability as they returned to their jobs. The senior services bus service was also in higher demand for transportation to Doctor’s appointments. Additionally, there was an issue coming into warmer weather which presented a problem in how to keep the refrigerated groceries cool during delivery.

For all of these reasons, effective, June 1, 2020 at 11:00 AM the grocery brigade suspended acceptance of any new orders and the last delivery was yesterday, Tuesday, June 9, 2020. While hopes were that the program could sustain through the end of June, the increasing loss of volunteers, bus and driver shortages forced the end of the program. Before that decision was made it was verified that local grocery stores could meet the demand in a way that met out seniors needs. We recommend seniors that are staying out of the grocery stores reach out to Shop Rite at Home as they are staffed and equipped to assist in your grocery orders (they are back to a 2 to 3 day turnaround). Their number is: (203) 262-1477. Market 32 in Oxford delivers through Insta Cart which is also another option.

The program took in 863 orders for a total of $78,406.03 over 45 days of service.

Thank you again to our amazing community for the support to this program and a big thank you to the Senior Services Team for their dedication to this program. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Grocery Brigade hotline at (475) 207-5504.
