Saturday, October 10, 2026 from 1-2:30pm in the Kingsley Room, join us for a presentation about historic local Shadrach Osborn.
People do not usually think of Southbury as the “breadbasket” of the nation. But 250 years ago, one local man was central to the endeavors that earned Connecticut its nickname as the “Provision State.” From his shop on Main Street North and also on the field of battle, Shadrach Osborn contributed to the Patriot cause as merchant, paymaster, commissary, and as bridgebuilder. Serving the local militia, State Line Troops and Continental Army throughout the Revolutionary War few men had made such a contribution to the founding of our nation and also to the formation of our local town government.
To coincide with the celebration of America’s 250, the Southbury Town Commission will unveil the newly restored tombstone over Osborn’s grave on October 3rd. Our Shadrach Recognition Week will conclude at the library where Commissioner Dwyer will explain how Osborn’s preservation techniques helped to preserve General Washington’s army, how Shadrach protected Southbury from the threat of British raiders, and how he assisted the French allies on to our victory over the British Army in 1781.
Like all Southbury Public Library programs, this program is free to attend and open to anyone regardless of town of residency. Registration is required. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Library. Please visit the link below for more information and to register.
