9/18/2026 - The Amistad Story: Connecticut’s Role in the Fight for Freedom on October 24, 2026

Saturday, October 24, 2026 from 1-2:30pm in the Kingsley Room, join us for a talk about the Amistad uprising.

In 1839, captive Africans seized control of the La Amistad, a ship transporting enslaved people. After being intercepted by the U.S. Navy, the captives won their freedom in a landmark 1841 Supreme Court case that became a major victory for the American abolitionist movement.

Join us as we go on a journey through the lives of the 53 Africans, how their freedom was interrupted, and how Connecticut played a major role in the abolitionist movement.

The program will be presented by a Discovering Amistad educator. Our educators are experienced in bringing the Amistad story to life through engaging storytelling, historical interpretation, and discussion.

Like all Southbury Public Library programs, this program is free to attend and open to anyone regardless of town of residency. Registration is required. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Southbury Library. Please visit the link below for more information and to register.
