4/15/2026 - Town of Southbury to Hold Public Information Session on Transfer Station Solar Project on April 30, 2026

The Town of Southbury will host a public information session on Thursday, April 30 at 7:00 pm in Room 205 at Southbury Town Hall to provide residents with details and an opportunity to ask questions about a proposed solar project at the Town’s Transfer Station. The outreach event is designed to engage the community early in the process, address potential concerns, and ensure transparency prior to formal review by the Planning Commission. Southbury Town Hall is located at 501 Main Street South.

The project will install a solar array on a portion of the Transfer Station property, putting currently underutilized land to productive use, generating renewable energy. The project would be privately developed and financed, meaning no taxpayer dollars would be used to construct the solar installation. The project is intended to provide new revenue to the town over the next 25–30 years. Under the agreement, the Town would receive approximately $35,000 per year in land-use lease payments for 20 to 35 years, depending on the lifespan of the solar panels.

Officials are also coordinating with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to ensure the project is designed in a way that protects the capped landfill at the Transfer Station site.

The public session will begin with an open-house format where residents can review informational displays and speak directly with project representatives. Displays will include a site plan, visual renderings of the project, plans for tree clearing and stormwater management, a construction timeline, and information about the project’s financial benefits to the Town.

Following the open house, Town officials and project representatives will provide a brief presentation explaining the purpose of the project, the site selection process, environmental considerations, and the anticipated economic benefits.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation, giving residents the opportunity to raise questions. Questions and feedback will be documented and shared with the Planning Commission as part of the project’s review in May.

The project is being developed in partnership with Verogy, whose representative will participate in the presentation along with Town officials.
