3/16/2026 - Employment Opportunity: Front Counter Customer Service Clerk

The Town of Southbury is seeking a friendly, organized, and customer-focused Front Counter Customer Service Clerk to support the Senior Services Department. This position serves as the first point of contact for residents and visitors to the Senior Center, providing high-quality customer service, administrative support, and assistance with daily operations, programs, and events.

The ideal candidate will have a positive demeanor, strong communication skills, and a genuine interest in working with senior citizens.

Pay Range: $18.00-$20.00 per hour

Hours: 15-20 per week

Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; 8:00am-1:00pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service at the Senior Center front counter
  • Greet visitors and assist with inquiries in person and by phone
  • Schedule, confirm, cancel, and follow up on appointments
  • Perform general clerical and secretarial duties
  • Provide routine administrative support to the Senior Center Administration
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for programs, activities, and special events
  • Support the Senior Center Coordinator with programming schedules and projects
  • Assist with special projects as assigned
  • Perform other related duties as required by the Director of Senior Services or other departments when necessary

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong telephone and customer service skills
  • Patience and compassion when working with senior citizens
  • Ability to listen attentively and respond empathetically
  • Ability to follow and enforce established policies and procedures
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently while receiving guidance and supervision
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to respond appropriately in crisis or emergency situations involving seniors

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while performing duties
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds of supplies, equipment, or files without assistance

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one (1) year of customer service experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
