3/12/2026 - Employment Opportunity: Adventure Day Camp Counselor

Southbury Parks & Recreation is seeking Adventure Day Camp Counselors for the upcoming summer season. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead a camp program for children filled with engaging activities and field trips in a fun and supportive environment. Pay Rate: $16.94 per hour
Hours: 15-35 hours per week
Schedule: Monday-Friday

Primary Accountabilities

Performs entry-level work assisting in the leadership and supervision of recreational activities for children in grades 1–5. Engages positively with campers to create a welcoming, safe, and fun environment that encourages children to return each day. Works under the close supervision of the Head Camp Counselor while learning departmental standards, recreation techniques, and program expectations.

Recreation Supervisor, Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, and Head Camp Counselor

Directly Supervises

Campers and Counselors-in-Training (C.I.T.s)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and be responsible for a daily group of 7–10 campers.
  • Promote positive camper interactions and support healthy social development.
  • Assist with the organization and movement of campers while maintaining appropriate behavior management and discipline.
  • Observe, enforce, and model all safety rules and precautions during recreational activities.
  • Provide basic first aid for minor injuries (e.g., bandages, ice packs, bug spray) and notify supervisory staff as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of camper locations at all times and communicate effectively with fellow staff.
  • Assist campers with personal belongings as necessary.
  • Safely lead campers between activity areas, including playgrounds, ball fields, and the pool, ensuring group cohesion.
  • Support lifeguards during swim time and supervise campers on the pool deck who are not swimming.
  • Assist with and participate in a variety of recreational activities, including arts and crafts, sports, dance, and drama.
  • Plan, organize, and lead simple age-appropriate recreational activities as assigned.
  • Demonstrate proper care and use of recreation equipment and supplies.
  • Administer First Aid/CPR/AED as needed, in accordance with training and camp protocols.
  • Work cooperatively and professionally with staff, campers, and participants.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Must hold current CPR/AED and Adult & Pediatric First Aid certification or obtain certification prior to the start of camp.
