2/28/2023 - Region 15 Students March 2023 Exhibit at Southbury Public Library

Region 15 schools are observing Youth Art Month again this year with a display of local student artwork in the Gloria Cachion Art Gallery of the Southbury Public Library, 100 Poverty Road, Southbury. The exhibit can be viewed at the library from Thursday, March 2, 2023 through Thursday, March 30, 2023.

“Our student artists demonstrate extraordinary talent. Quality art programming is an integral part of our educational curriculum and we appreciate the opportunity to share their pieces with the public. The value of art education and the skills developed through visual arts experiences are invaluable,” said Jeromy Nelson, Director of Fine, Applied and Technical Arts in Region 15.

A selection of two-dimensional mixed media, paintings, photography and drawings created by Region 15 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade will be on display, including work from students in Advanced Placement Fine Art and Photography classes.

The displays coincide with Youth Art Month; a program administered nationally by the Council for Art Education (CFAE) and is celebrated by the Southbury Public Library and the Region 15 community. The event emphasizes the value of art education for all students, encourages support for quality school art programs and provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences.

“Learning and experimenting with new forms of expression is exhilarating and builds a sense of mastery and confidence. It is a wonderful experience for our students to be able to display their work in a public space. Their passion, creativity, and commitment to their art education is inspirational,” said Florin Firimita, Art Teacher at Pomperaug High School.

This year’s collection includes pieces from students in Firimita’s art classes. Their work through various mediums and innovative approaches symbolize the students’ self expression and is clearly displayed through meaningful art.

The exhibit will be open during regular library hours which are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30am to 5:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am to 9:00pm, Saturdays 9:30am to 4:00pm and Sundays 12:00pm to 5:00pm. The exhibit will also be online too as a virtual gallery.
