8/8/2022 - Children’s and Teen Programs for September 2022

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce events for September 2022 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of programs this month. Children’s Programs:

CT Humane Society: Safety PAWtrol - Thursday, September 1 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room. This interactive program will teach children how to be safe around dogs. Participants will learn how to read dog body language and how to safely approach, greet, and interact with dogs. There will not be live animals present for this program. Ages 5-12. Registration required.

Build Your Own Sticker Book: ICONS – Tuesday, September 6 at 5 pm in the Kingsley Room. A unique, interactive family-friendly program where you will learn, problem-solve & “Build Your Own Sticker Book” Like Challenges? Learning about interesting people? You’re going to love the ICONS Book! Ages 7 & up and families. Registration is required.

CT Humane Society: Paws and Pages - Wednesday, September 7 at 4:30 pm in the Storytime Room. This program is designed for early learners interested in pets. A CHS humane educator will share a pet-themed book and then lead an interactive discussion about safe and kind interactions with the type of companion animal featured in the book. There will be no live animals at this event. Ages 5-12. Registration required.

Farmers’ Market – Thursday, September 8 & 22 from 3:30-5:30pm at the Southbury Town Hall Green. Drop by and join the Southbury librarians for an afternoon of reading and crafts while you shop at the Farmers’ Market. All ages welcome.

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, September 10, 17 & 24. Stop by the Youth Services department Saturdays to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, September 12, 19 & 26 at 10:30 am in the Storytime room. Join Miss Jennifer for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday except Labor Day. All ages welcome. No registration required.

ARTuesday – Tuesday, September 13 & 27 at 5 pm in the Storytime room. Stop by on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Bookmark Bunch Book Club - Thursday, September 15 at 4:30 pm in the Storytime room. Join Miss Jen for a brand new elementary age book club. Each month we’ll read a different fiction chapter book. This month’s book is The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Pick up a copy at the Youth Services desk any time after August 15. Grades 3-5. Registration required.

Preschool Skills Mornings - Friday, September 16 & 30 at 10 am in the Storytime Room. Preschoolers are invited to drop in for a fun and informal skill building session. Play and practice using thematic morning bins. Ages 2-5. No registration required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Thursday, September 29 at 11 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required

Fall Scene Craft - Thursday, September 29 at 4:30 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Miss Katie for an afternoon of crafting. This month we’re making autumnal scenes using a variety of natural materials. Grades 2-5. Registration is required.

Teen Programs:

Teen DIY: Fabric Succulents – Monday, September 12 from 4-5 pm in the Brown Room. Teen DIY is back! Join us to make fabric succulents! These felt and fleece plants are as easy to make as they are to care for. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required. Teen Trivia Tuesdays – Tuesday, September 13 from 6-7 pm in the Brown Room. Join us for a fun trivia contest! Test your knowledge of topics like books, geography, animals, space, and more! This event is the first in a series of Teen Trivia Tuesdays that will continue every second Tuesday of the month going forward. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Chopped! with Food Explorers – Wednesday, September 14 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers to test your creativity like you’re on an episode of “Chopped”! You’ll get into teams and create a delicious recipe together, choosing from a limited pantry that’s provided, and you’ll taste test both teams’ creations to see whose is the tastiest! All food is nut free but may contain dairy and/or eggs. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Fall Book Bingo – Thursday, September 15 through Thursday, December 15, 2022. Starting September 21, pick up a Book Bingo Card and make Bingo by reading books in different fun categories to make rows horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Making bingo (or multiples) can earn you raffle entries for a $50 Visa Gift Card! Fill out your whole card and get a special library mug with candy inside! Grades 6-12.

Canvas Stencil Art – Thursday, September 22 from 6-7pm in the Storytime Room. through Thursday, December 15, 2022. Join us to make negative space silhouette art! We'll use vinyl stencils and acrylic paint to make paintings, and then peel away the vinyl stencils to reveal a negative space design. Please wear clothing you don’t mind getting messy. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Minute to Win It Mondays – Monday, September 26 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Fast-paced and fun, you’ve got one minute to succeed in these silly challenges! Everyone wins because they’re as fun to play as they are to watch. This event is the first in a series of Minute to Win It Mondays that will continue every fourth Monday of the month going forward. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.
