6/17/2022 - Children’s and Teen Programs for July 2022

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce programming for July 2022 for children and teens. We are offering a mix of in-person and virtual events this month. Summer Reading Continues! - until Friday, August 12 at 5:00 pm online or in person at the Second Floor Circulation Desk. It’s not too late to participate in Summer Reading! You can register in person, or online with our new, improved, and easier to use tracker, BeanStack! Log your reading time, attend fun events, and participate in other activities! Children’s Programs:

Open House Make or Take Craft – Saturday, July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30. Stop by the Youth Services department every Saturday to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

ARTuesday – Tuesday, July 5 & 19 at 5 pm in the Storytime room. Stop by on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, July 11, 18 & 25 at 10:30 am in the Storytime room. Join Miss Heather for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday except July 4. All ages welcome. No registration required.

PJ Storytime – Thursday, July 14 & 28 at 6 pm in the Storytime room. Grab your jammies and join Miss Katie for stories, songs, and a small craft. All ages welcome. No registration required.

White Memorial Conservation Center: Creature Feature - Wednesday, July 6 at 1 pm in the Kingsley Room. What makes a mammal a mammal? Or a reptile a reptile? How about an amphibian an amphibian? Scientists have grouped animals based on similar features. Using natural props, animal mounts, and LIVE animals, we will break down the characteristics of several major animal groups. All ages welcome. Registration required.

Food Explorers Baking: Cheesecake Egg Rolls & Cannoli Cones - Thursday, July 7 at 11:00 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers for a special two hour baking workshop! You’ll create two delicious recipes: Cheesecake Egg Rolls and Cannoli Cones! Each recipe is nut free but will contain dairy and/or eggs. Children will work on most elements individually. Grades 2-5. Registration required.

Chevron Style Friendship Bracelets - Friday, July 8 at 3:00 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Kira & Katie to make chevron style friendship bracelets using embroidery floss. Make a super cute gift for your BFF - or keep it for yourself! Grades 3-8. Registration required.

Food Explorers: Pizza Bites - Friday, July 8 at 4:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join the registered dietitians from Food Explorers to make the perfect summer snack - three cheese pizza bites. Ages 7 & up. Registration required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Monday, July 11 at 11:30 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required

CT Humane Society: Kind Kids - Thursday, July 14 at 1 pm in the Kingsley Room. This program is fun, interactive, and designed for ages 5-12. The program focuses on being kind and compassionate towards people and pets to build upon children’s social and emotional learning. Ages 5-12. Registration required.

Music Together® at the Library with Soulshine Arts - Saturday, July 16 at 11 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Leslie Pratt of Soulshine Arts in Woodbury as you sing, dance, and play while bonding with your children through music. Soulshine Arts provides the internationally loved and research based Music Together curriculum, which provides children a lifetime of joy through music by getting them started at a young age. Ages birth to 5. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Imagine Nation Water Exploration: Bubbles – Tuesday, July 19 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room Imagine Nation’s Museum Educators are back to explore water sciences with a fun and interesting learning experience all about bubbles. Ages 5-11. Space is limited. Registration required.

Hot Air Balloon Craft (Parts 1 & 2) – Thursday, July 21 & 28 at 3:30 pm in the Kingsley Room Join Miss Heather and Miss Katie for a two-part craft program to make hot air balloon lanterns. Participants should plan on attending both sessions to complete the craft. Grades 2-5. Space is limited. Registration required.

White Memorial Conservation Center: Outdoor Discovery - Friday, July 22 at 1 pm on the library grounds. No matter what “green space” we’re in, you can find nature! We’ll lead participants in several fun physical activities, including a seek-and-find mission to spy natural items, from cones to acorns to feathers to live critters! Participants will truly get to be immersed in their outdoor environment, wherever it is, while learning some fun facts and ID tips about the natural items all around them. All ages welcome. Registration required.

Bring the Hoopla - Saturday, July 23 at 10 am & 10:30 am in the Kinsley Room. Bring the Hoopla puts the fun back into fitness with a high energy, unique program where you’ll use Hoopla hoops as the main tool to build self-confidence, focus on teamwork and creativity, and encourage self-expression through the journey of positive movement. Ages 2-5 at 10 am; ages 6-11 at 10:30 am. Registration required.

ImagArena - Friday, July 29 at 12 pm in the Kingsley Room. More than a typical building workshop, ImagArena® combines the spirit of an art program, the materials of a building workshop, and the framework of a video game to provide an experience that engages everyone. Participants engage in energetic building challenges featuring over a dozen building materials. Ages 6-12. Registration required.

High School Nutmeg Book Club – Monday, July 11, 4-5pm in the Brown Room. Join us as we read through all of the 2023 High School Nutmeg Nominees together! This month, we'll be reading Furia by Yamille Saied Méndez. Pick up your book from the Teen Department anytime to read before our July meeting. Voting for the 2023 Nutmegs takes place in April 2023, and this is a fun and social way to read all of this year's Nutmegs. Grades 9-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

10 Minutes to Save the Planet – Wednesday, July 13, 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Take a hands on look at the challenge of climate change—what would you plan as your actions to meet the goal of 2.0°C temperature rise by 2050? Use a climate action simulator to see how changing different factors influences climate change. This program is with the CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Minute to Win It – Monday, July 18, 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Fast paced and fun, you've got one minute to succeed in these quick challenges! With snacks involved in some challenges and all of them being hilarious to watch, everyone wins. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Third Thursday Game Night: Apples to Apples – Thursday, July 21, 6-7 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join us to play Apples to Apples, a game of hilarious comparisons! Easy to learn and fun to play, there are just two types of cards: Things and Descriptions. Each player takes turns being the judge and pulling the next Description card. The other players try to pick, from the cards in their hands, the Things they feel best match that Description—in the eyes of the judge. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Learn to Play the Ukulele! – Friday, July 22 from 4-5pm in the Kingsley Room. Want to try an instrument that is fun and easy to play? Join Julie Stepanek as she shows the fundamentals of ukulele playing! You'll learn how to tune, strum and read chords. After a short lesson, you'll be able to play songs. No experience necessary. Bring your own ukulele or borrow one of hers. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Bring the Hoopla – Saturday, July 23 from 12-1pm in the Kingsley Room. Bring the Hoopla brings the fun back into fitness with their high energy, unique program where we use our Hoopla hoops as the main tool! Have fun and focus on teamwork and creativity through the journey of positive movement in this event customized for ages 12-18. Space is limited. Registration required.

Middle School Nutmeg Book Club – Monday, July 25, 4-5pm in the Brown Room. Join us as we read through all of the 2023 Middle School Nutmeg Nominees together! This month, we'll be reading The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson! Pick up your book from the Teen Department starting on Monday, June 27! Voting for the 2023 Nutmegs takes place in April 2023, and this is a fun and social way to read all of this year's Nutmegs. Grades 7 & 8. Space is limited. Registration required.

Testing the Waters – Wednesday, July 27 from 6-7 pm in the Kingsley Room. We are all drawn to water, but sometimes we harm what we love. In this program, you'll make simulated systems and conduct qualitative water tests to evaluate the health of a water environment. Working to reduce our impacts has resulted in many new materials and design applications; we'll also learn about these and how to apply them to reduce impacts in our community. This program is with the CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Food Explorers In Person: Ricotta Gnocchi and Marinara Sauce – Thursday, July 28, 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join Food Explorers to make your very own ricotta gnocchi and marinara sauce from scratch! This recipe will be nut free and each teen will make their own portion, with no sharing of ingredients or equipment. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.
