11/10/2021 - Virtual Events for Children in December 2021

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce programming for December 2021 for children and teens. We are offering a mix of in-person and virtual events this fall. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS:

I Spy Bear Hunt – December in the Youth Services Department
Join us for an I Spy style scavenger hunt. The bears have escaped from their books! Bear characters from children’s literature hidden throughout the Youth Services department. Complete the scavenger hunt and receive a small prize.

Open House Take & Make Craft – Saturday, December 4, 11 & 18.
Stop by the Youth Services department every Saturday to take home a thematic craft. Available while supplies last.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, December 6 & 13 at 10:30 am on Facebook Live
Join Miss Heather for stories and songs every Monday. Crafts available in the Youth Services department while supplies last. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Storytime with Katie – Wednesday, December 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 at 10:30 am on Facebook Live
Join Miss Katie for stories and songs geared towards toddlers and older. Crafts available in the Youth Services department while supplies last. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Nutmegs at Noon – Tuesday, December 7 & 14 at 12:00 pm on Facebook Live
Nutmegs are back! Join Miss Heather as we explore the 2022 Elementary Nutmeg and Charter Oak Nominees. Grades K-3. No registration required.

Holiday Ornament Craft – Thursday, December 9 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room
us and make a festive holiday ornament as Miss Katie shares related stories. Makes the perfect gift or keep it for yourself! Grades 2-5. Registration required.

Food Explorers Online: Gingerbread S’mores Cups – Monday, December 13 at 5:00 pm on Zoom
Join the Registered Dietitians from Food Explorers and learn how to make a delicious holiday dessert. Ages 7 & up and families. Registration is required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Tuesday, December 14 at 10:00 am in the Kingsley Room
Food Explorers is back in the library! Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! Come and explore new flavors and textures while playing games all about food and MyPlate! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Registration is required

Food Explorers: Cookie Decorating – Thursday, December 16 at 4:30 pm in the Kingsley Room
Join Food Explorers for a Holiday Cookie Extravaganza! You’ll frost and decorate your own holiday cookies with a very special twist…you’ll color your frosting with fruits! See how by attending this delicious program. This program is nut free but will contain dairy and/or eggs. Ages 7 & up. Registration required.

Family Film Friday: Raya the Last Dragon – Friday, December 17 at 6 pm in Kingsley Room
Families are invited to watch the new hit Disney animated film. Bring your own blankets and pillows. No food or beverages are allowed. Rated PG. All ages welcome. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration required.

TEEN PROGRAMS:

Teen LitLoot Book Subscription Boxes – Starting Wednesday, December 1
Register anytime in September for our LitLoot book subscription box and get two book selections customized to you along with some extra added on goodies in this box of book magic! If you register after Sunday, November 21, your box will be ready approximately 1 week after your registration. Grades 6-12.

Teen To-Go Craft Kits: Felt Snowglobe – Starting Monday, December 13
Pick up complete kits to make a Felt Snowglobe from the Teen Department while supplies last. Each kit will have instructions and all supplies needed (except scissors). You can turn your snowglobe into an ornament or a keychain. Kits are not limited per person, but we ask that you only take what you (and siblings or friends you are crafting with) need. Grades 6-12.

Food Explorers Online: Chocolate Peppermint Cupcakes – Tuesday, December 14 from 5-6pm on Zoom
Join Food Explorers to make Chocolate Peppermint Cupcakes! You’ll make the cupcakes and frosting from scratch, and learn how to make your very own piping bag. Cook along with us over Zoom from the comfort of your very own kitchen. Space is limited for time to answer individual questions and walk everyone through this program. Find out the ingredients list and register on our website here. Grades 6-12 and their families. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Advisory Board –Tuesday, December 28 from 6-7 pm in the Youth Services Tutor Corner
We are looking for creative, energetic volunteers in grades 6-12 who are interested in making a difference at the Southbury Public Library! Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members can directly influence our teen book and AV collections, teen programming and events, and other teen services. Each monthly meeting opens with a discussion about ideas for programs, materials, and more and closes out with some special volunteer projects. If you are interested in serving on the Teen Advisory Board, you can apply to be considered on our website at www.southburylibrary.org/tab.

Teen DIY In Person: Lucet Cord Bracelet/Lanyard – Wednesday, December 29 from 4-5 pm in the Kingsley Room
Join us to make an i-cord bracelet or lanyard with a tool called a lucet fork. This tool makes a strong, square cord perfect for bracelets or lanyards and is a technique that has been around for hundreds of years. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.
