9/14/2021 - Children’s and Teen Programs for October 2021

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce programming for October 2021 for children and teens. We are offering a mix of in-person and virtual events this fall. Children’s Programs:

Open House Take & Make Craft – Saturday, October 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30.
Stop by the Youth Services department every Saturday to take home a thematic craft. Available while supplies last.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, October 4, 18 & 25 at 10:30 am on Facebook Live
Join Miss Heather for stories and songs every Monday except October 11. Crafts available in the Youth Services department while supplies last. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Nutmegs at Noon – Tuesday, October 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 12:00 pm on Facebook Live
Nutmegs are back! Join Miss Heather as we explore the 2022 Elementary Nutmeg and Charter Oak Nominees. No registration required.

Storytime with Katie – Wednesday, October 6, 13, 20 & 27 at 10:30 am on Facebook Live
Join Miss Katie for stories and songs geared towards toddlers and older. Crafts available in the Youth Services department while supplies last. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Farmers’ Market Storytime – Thursday, October 7 from 3-6 pm at the Town Hall Green.
Stop by to see Miss Heather and Miss Katie share fall and farm themed stories while you’re browsing at the Farmers’ Market. Bring home a Take & Make Craft. All ages welcome.

Tiny Food Explorers: In-Person – Tuesday, October 12 at 10:00 am in Kingsley Room
Food Explorers is back in the library! Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! Come and explore new flavors and textures while playing games all about food and MyPlate! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Registration is required

Kitty Pumpkin Craft Online – Thursday, October 14 at 4:30 pm on Zoom
We’re turning craft pumpkins into Halloween inspired, magical cats, as Miss Katie shares related stories. Pick up your craft packet any time after Friday, October 8 during open library hours. Grades 2-5. Registration required.

Celebrate Fall with Ryan SanAngelo – Saturday, October 16 at 1:00 pm in the Kingsley Room.
Southbury’s favorite picture book author is back with an awesome fall-themed music performance. All ages welcome. Registration required.

STEAMonday Online: Candy Corn Challenge – Monday, October 18 at 4:00 pm on Facebook Live
We’re experimenting with everyone’s favorite (or least favorite) seasonal candy. Recommended for Grades 2-5.

Family Film Friday: Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway – Friday, October 22 at 6 pm in Kingsley Room
We’re back in-person with a monthly movie screening. Families are invited to watch the sequel to the animated film based on Beatrix Potter’s beloved bunny. Bring your own blankets and pillows. No food or beverages are allowed. Rated PG. All ages welcome. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Food Explorers Online: Greek Quesadillas w/Tzatziki Sauce – Monday, October 25 at 5:00 pm on Zoom
Join the Registered Dietitians from Food Explorers and learn how to make Greek Quesadillas with Tzatziki Sauce. Ages 7 & up and families. Registration is required.

Haunted House Craft Online – Thursday, October 28 at 4:30 pm on Zoom
We’re getting crafty again with another Halloween inspired creation and stories from Miss Katie. Pick up your craft packet any time after Friday, October 22 during open library hours. Grades 2-5. Registration required.

Teen Programs:

Teen LitLoot Book Subscription Boxes – Starting Friday, October 1
Register anytime in September for our LitLoot book subscription box and get two book selections customized to you along with some extra added on goodies in this box of book magic! Grades 6-12.

Teen To-Go Craft Kits: Felt Bat Plush – Starting Tuesday, October 12
Pick up complete kits to make a Felt Bat from the Teen Department while supplies last. Go batty with these cute friends you can hang with. Each kit will have instructions and all supplies needed (except scissors). Grades 6-12.

Teen DIY In Person: Twine Pumpkins – Thursday, October 14 from 6-7pm in the Kingsley Room
Join us in person to make twine pumpkins. These gourd-geous crafts are as fun as they are easy to make. Space is limited and registration required. Grades 6-12.

Maple Apple Blondies with Food Explorers Online – Wednesday, October 20 from 5-6pm on Zoom
Join Food Explorers to make Maple Apple Blondies! These brownie wannabes are loaded with fall flavors. Cook along with us over Zoom from the comfort of your very own kitchen. Grades 6-12 and their families. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Advisory Board – Tuesday, October 26 from 6-7 pm in the Youth Services Tutor Corner
We are looking for creative, energetic volunteers in grades 6-12 who are interested in making a difference at the Southbury Public Library! Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members can directly influence our teen book and AV collections, teen programming and events, and other teen services. Each monthly meeting opens with a discussion about ideas for programs, materials, and more and closes out with some special volunteer projects. If you are interested in serving on the Teen Advisory Board, you can apply to be considered on our website at www.southburylibrary.org/tab.
