11/8/2025 - Veterans Day Poppy Drive on November 8-11, 2025 Lt. C. Edward Hine American Legion Post 147 Southbury is having a Veterans Day Poppy Drive and Wreaths Across America Fund Raiser. The Poppy Drive and Fund Raiser will take place on November 8-11, at two locations, Southbury Plaza Stop and Shop and the Dunkin Donuts. The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifice made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. The funds raised support local American Legion programs throughout the year. This past year, American Legion Post 147 awarded $3000 worth of scholarships to Region 15 students. Over the years, the American Legion has sponsored young men and women (High School Juniors) to attend Boys State and Girls State, an American Legion program, to introduce young men and women to the workings of government. The American Legion has also sponsored young men and women (High School Juniors) to attend State Police Week. Participants spend a week at the State Police Academy learning about law enforcement and possible careers. This will be the seventh year that the American Legion has sponsored the Wreaths Across America program. The American Legion will place a Veterans Wreath on the approximately 610 veterans’ graves in the local cemeteries. Last year, December 2024 Wreaths Across America placed over 2 million Veterans Wreaths at over 4000 participating locations across the United States and worldwide. This endeavor would not be possible without the help of volunteers. There are volunteers that are organizing the program, truck drivers that are donating their time and trucks to deliver the wreaths and volunteers that will place the wreaths on the veterans’ graves.
