7/13/2022 - Children’s and Teen Programs for August 2022

The Southbury Public Library Youth Services department is pleased to announce programming for August 2022 for children and teens. We are offering a variety of special summer programs this month. Summer Reading Continues! - until Friday, August 12 at 5:00 pm in person at the Second Floor Circulation Desk or 11:59 pm online. It’s not too late to participate in Summer Reading! You can register in person, or online with our new, improved, and easier to use tracker, BeanStack! Log your reading time, attend fun events, and participate in other activities! Children’s Programs:

Open House Make or Take Craft – Monday, August 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29. Stop by the Youth Services department Mondays in August to make a thematic craft. Make it here or bring it home. Crayons and glue available in the library. Available while supplies last.

Drop-In Storytime – Monday, August 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 at 10:30 am in the Storytime room. Join Miss Heather for stories, rhymes, and a small craft every Monday. All ages welcome. No registration required.

ARTuesday – Tuesday, August 2, 16 & 30 at 5 pm in the Storytime room. Stop by on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month for a playful, messy, and expressive art experience where there is no right or wrong. Come play and experiment with a variety of art mediums and themes. Smocks recommended. Ages 7 & up. Drop-In; No registration required.

Music Together® at the Library with Soulshine Arts – Tuesday, August 2 at 11 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Leslie Pratt of Soulshine Arts in Woodbury as you sing, dance, and play while bonding with your children through music. Soulshine Arts provides the internationally loved and research based Music Together® curriculum, which provides children a lifetime of joy through music by getting them started at a young age. Ages birth to 5. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Imagine Nation Chemistry Exploration: Slime – Wednesday, August 3 at 12:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Imagine Nation’s Museum Educators are back to explore chemical sciences with a fun and interesting learning experience all about slime. Ages 5-11. Space is limited. Registration required.

Tiny Food Explorers – Thursday, August 4 at 11:30 am in the Kingsley Room. Join Tiny Food Explorers for some fun with food! You’ll make a hands-on healthy snack that even the pickiest of eaters will be keen to try. All snack ingredients will be nut free but may contain dairy. No food will be shared. Ages 2-5 & caregivers. Space is limited. Registration is required

Seashell Koala Craft – Friday, August 5 at 11:00 am in the Storytime Room Join Miss Katie to make koalas using sea shells. Grades 2-5. Space is limited. Registration required.

Food Explorers: Key Lime Pie Cups - Friday, August 5 at 3:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join the registered dietitians from Food Explorers to make the perfect summer dessert. You'll layer crushed graham crackers with a zesty lime cream cheese filling, topped with homemade whipped cream. This recipe is nut free and contains dairy. Ages 7 & up. Registration required.

PJ Storytime – Thursday, August 11 & 25 at 6 pm in the Storytime room. Grab your jammies and join Miss Katie for stories, songs, and a small craft. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Little Paisley Makes a Big Difference: An Author Visit with Jenna Landmon – Tuesday, August 16 at 2:00 pm in the Storytime Room. Join Southbury’s own Jenna Landmon as she reads from her own book, Little Paisley Makes a Big Difference. Learn all about the writing process. All ages welcome. Registration recommended.

Minecraft Inspired Axolotl Craft – Thursday, August 18 at 4:30 p m in the Storytime Room Join Miss Katie to make an axolotl. Grades 2-5. Space is limited. Registration required.

Teen Programs:

Giant Scrabble – Monday, August 1 from 3:00-5:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join us in person to play Giant Scrabble! This super-size board game is very similar to the original game, but is super giant and super fun! Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Comics and Mindfulness Drawing Workshop – Friday, August 5 from 3:30–4:30 pm in the Brown Room. Join cartoonist Cara Bean in this hands-on, visual thinking and mindfulness workshop. No prior art experience required as Cara walks us through a series of creative exercises that can help lessen anxiety, build confidence, and grow creativity. Together, we’ll go over the basics of communicative drawing (stick figures allowed!) and develop the skills needed to doodle as a form of play and problem-solving. Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Camp Crafternoon: Lanyards – Wednesday, August 10 from 4:00–5:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Join us to make summer camp style lanyards! Grades 6-12. Space is limited. Registration required.

Chocolate Olympics – Wednesday, August 17 from 4:00–5:00 pm in the Kingsley Room. Competition can be sweet! Join us to compete in a variety of chocolate based tasks, including a donut hole relay, oreo stacking challenge, and blind chocolate taste test. Please note: chocolate, nuts, dairy, and gluten will be present. Grades 6-12. Space is limited.
