BOOK TALK FEATURING THOMAS F. ARMY, JR.
Dr. Thomas F. Army, Jr. will discuss his book, Engineering Victory: How Technology Won the Civil War, at the Southbury Public Library on Thursday, April 13th at 2:00pm in the library’s Kingsley Room. He is an adjunct professor at Quinebaug Valley Community College. Copies of his book will be available for sale and following his talk there will be a book signing. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library.
In Engineering Victory: How Technology Won the Civil War, Dr. Army brings a fresh approach to the question of why the North prevailed in the Civil War by exploring how strength in engineering was a critical factor in the war’s outcome. He delves deeply into an aspect of the Civil War most other historians have only discussed in passing.
Though Dr. Army has always had an interest in technology, he doesn’t consider himself a historian of science and technology, but rather a Civil War historian. His book focuses less on northern technological advancements and more on the widespread exchange of technical information in the North during the antebellum period and the impact that shared knowledge had in bringing about a Union Victory.
Registration is required. To register visit the library in person or contact the Southbury Public Library’s Reference Desk at (203) 262-0626x130.
