2/28/2017 - Variety of Films at Southbury Public Library in March

MEDIA RELEASE, February 28, 2017, Southbury, CT

Variety of Films at Southbury Public Library

Comedy-drama, a real-life drama that made history, a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta and a Bette Davis classic are on the Wednesday afternoon movie menu this month at Southbury Public Library.

On March 8th Kate Winslet stars as a glamorous, talented woman who has been working at exclusive Paris fashion houses and returns to her hometown in the Australian outback to care for her eccentric ailing mother, played by Judy Davis. She transforms the women of her town and wreaks sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

The March 15th film tells the story of the interracial couple living in Virginia who were arrested for having married. Their challenge of the anti-miscegenation law launched a legal battle that would end at the US Supreme Court.

One of Gilbert and Sullivan’s lesser-known operettas is being shown on March 22nd, with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr providing some information about that inimitable pair. The operetta concerns a young man who, determined to have everyone share the purity of his true love, arranges for a love potion to be administered to the entire village.

The 1938 film being shown on March 29th is set in pre-Civil War New Orleans. Bette Davis is a Southern Belle with a knack for manipulating the men in her life, who include Henry Fonda and George Brent. Scorned by the man she loves, she lashes out in revenge and destroys lives in the process. Also in the cast are Margaret Lindsay, Fay Bainter and Donald Crisp.

All the films begin at 1:00 PM in the Kingsley Meeting room surround sound theater, with infrared listening system available; most have closed captioning. Because of licensing and copyright agreements, the Library cannot list the titles of the films. They are offered free to the public by Friends of the Southbury Public Library, with the videos provided by Connecticut Libraries. For further information, call the Library at 203-262-0626.
