JAY KAPLAN EXHIBIT AT THE SOUTHBURY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Photographs of Janie Pierce Park Featured at Southbury Public Library

Award-winning photographer Jay Kaplan will present his photographs of Southbury’s Janie Pierce Park in an exhibition to be held from Wednesday, June 1, through Tuesday, June 28, 2016 in Southbury Public Library’s Gloria Cachion Gallery and Brown Room. The library is located at 100 Poverty Rd., Southbury, CT, 203-262-0626.

These large color and monochromatic images -- taken at different times of day and in varied atmospheric conditions throughout the year -- capture the beauty and vitality of this small preserve.

Kaplan admits that “it is quite by chance that I came across Janie Pierce Park, even though it is located just minutes from my home.” The park itself, according to Kaplan, “is not a particularly remarkable place”; rather, it is “typical of the commonplace beauty we all-too-often take for granted in our lush Connecticut landscape.” Once he discovered this refuge, Kaplan found himself drawn back to it again and again, finding in it both solitude and an accessible connection to nature. Kaplan describes his digital archival photographs of the park as an “attempt to convey (his) appreciation.”

Jay Kaplan has lived and worked in Litchfield County for the past eleven years. Most of his professional career, however, was spent in New York City where, for almost two decades, he served as the executive director of the New York Council for the Humanities, followed by over a decade as the director of programs and exhibitions for Brooklyn Public Library. Throughout that time he maintained a strong interest in photography, although his professional involvement was largely from an editorial, critical, or curatorial perspective. Several years ago, Kaplan picked up a camera and began to devote himself entirely to creating and interpreting images. His photographs have been shown around Connecticut in both individual and group shows.
