June Films at Southbury Public Library
A self-made millionairess, a tight-rope walker, two 20th-century Hollywood superstars and Shakespeare are featured in films showing on Wednesday afternoons at Southbury Public Library this month.
The June 8 film is a biographical comedy-drama based on the life – and family across 4 generations -- of the divorced-mother of 3 who founded a business dynasty starting with her invention of the Miracle Mop. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert DeNiro, Bradley Cooper, Isabella Rosselini, and Diane Ladd playing assorted family members and supporters.
On June 15 it’s the story of how Philippe Petit, who began as a young French street performer, assembled a team to help him achieve his dream of walking between the World Trade Center towers in 1974. Philippe trained the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play the role; Ben Kingsley appears as his long-time advisor. The film is dedicated to the victims of September 11.
Fireworks literally go off when Cary Grant and Grace Kelly get together in the June 22 film, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. He’s a retired American cat burglar living on the Riviera who has to prove his innocence by exposing someone who has been imitating his technique with series of jewel thefts. She’s a visiting tourist and probable target who sets her own sights on Cary.
With the library’s summer reading program centered on Shakespeare, the June 29 offering is the multi-Oscar winning 1998 film that imagines an episode in the young Will’s life when he experiences writer’s block. The words start flowing when the beautiful Lady Viola enters, on stage and into his heart. Joseph Fiennes plays Will, Gwyneth Paltrow is Viola, and among the large cast is Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth.
The films are offered free to the public, sponsored by Friends of the Southbury Public Library and the videos provided by Connecticut Libraries. They begin at 1:00 PM in the Kingsley Meeting room surround sound theater, with infrared listening system available. Because of licensing and copyright agreements, the Library cannot list the titles of the films. For further information, call the Library at 203-262-0626.
