MEDIA RELEASE, August 22, 2016, Southbury, CT

ARTIST ZUFAR BIKBOV TALKS ABOUT PLEIN AIR PAINTING

The Southbury Public library is hosting artist Zufar Bikbov an award-winning oil painter who specializes in plein air painting on Monday, September 19th at 2:00pm in the library’s Kingsley Room. Zufar will talk about what plein air is and why it is so popular today. He will tell about his background, explain how he got started and describe his painting technique and also, he will touch upon Russian and Soviet Era impressionism. Following his talk, there will be a Q & A session. Zufar’s work is on display in the library’s Gloria Cachion Art Gallery from September 1 – September 29th.

Influenced by his father, Zufar’s artistic talent grew as a child in Kazan, Russia. He was 11 years old when he painted his first plein air works of nearby village cottages and of a horse resting next to a carriage delivering pies to local market. From those experiences, he discovered his love of landscape painting over still-life or portrait painting. When time came to choose a career, he chose the medical field. During his study in medical school, then his residency and finally his move to the United States, art was still an essential part of his life. He participated in exhibits “Doctors Paint” in State Museum of Fine Arts in Kazan and at Yale Medical School. In the past decade, he has won awards on the national level including awards at Plein Air Easton in Maryland. He received a Medal of Honor and Merit from the Kent Art Association which was the first United States art organization that he joined. He is an active member of the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society. This year Zufar was asked to participate in the prestigious 18th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air. His works are owned in private collections from New England to California and in UK, Spain and of course in Russia.

Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Southbury Public Library. To register, please call the Reference Desk at 203-262-0626 x 130 or stop by the Reference Desk.
