February Movies at Southbury Public Library
Magic and reality combine in the heartwarming film being shown on February 10 at Southbury Public Library, the first of this month’s Wednesday afternoon offerings. A small boy enjoying an idyllic life in a small town has his world shattered when his beloved father goes off to fight in World War II. A chance encounter with a stage magician awakens him to his dormant abilities and the power of faith, and his devotion to his father extends into the realm of miracles.
It’s a not-always amicable joining of generations in the very contemporary comedy-drama showing on February 17. Robert DeNiro plays a 70-year-old widower bored with retirement who takes an apparently menial job at an online fashion site. Anne Hathaway is the running-on-all-cylinders founder and boss –and also a wife and mother. She and her young employees find there’s a lot to learn from one who’s been around awhile. Rene Russo plays the helpful office masseuse.
The February 24th film is a story about Grace Kelly, who retired from the screen when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Six years later, director Alfred Hitchcock offers her a chance to return to Hollywood, and it becomes a crisis in her marriage just as Monaco faces a critical situation with France. Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, Tim Roth as Rainier; Frank Langella and Parker Posey are among the cast.
The films, all with closed captioning, begin at 1:00 PM in the Kingsley Meeting room surround sound theater, with infrared listening system available. Because of licensing and copyright agreements, the Library cannot list the titles of the films. They are offered free to the public by Friends of the Southbury Public Library, with the videos provided by Connecticut Libraries. For further information, call the Library at 203-262-0626.
