Temporary signs summary of zoning code

The following temporary signs are permitted within any town right of way or property set back area, provided that one obtains a zoning permit or temporary sign form that details the type, size, location, dates of display, and person responsible for posting and removing the signs.

Community events (non-profit organizations):

  • Two signs 12 square feet or smaller;
  • May be posted up to 14 days prior to the event, and removed within 48 hours after the end of the event.

Grand opening or special sale:

  • One sign 12 square feet of smaller, less than 6 feet in any dimension may be displayed up to 4 times per year (once per calendar quarter);
  • Can be posted for up to a 10 day time period;
  • May hang from a window, post on a wall, or stake to the ground;
  • Subject to obtaining a zoning permit (you may file one zoning permit for the entire year);

Political signs:

Residential districts
  • One sign 2 square feet in size posted up to 60 days prior to the election and removed within 48 hours after'
  • Cannot attach to trees, utility poles, or traffic signs;
All other districts
  • Two signs per property,  each up to 12 square feet in size, subject to the same restrictions as above.

    Location of signs:

    • May be located within a street or town right of way, or a front yard zoning set back area
