VETERANS' TAX EXEMPTION PROGRAMS IN SOUTHBURY

There are three tax property tax exemption programs in Southbury for veterans and their surviving spouses.  Qualified veterans may receive benefits from all three programs.  Two programs are mandated by the State and are not subject to local modification.  The third is a local option which allows the town to adjust the qualifying income and the level of tax exemption within State-set limits.

 

1. State Mandated Recognition Program:

Exemption   $1500 exemption of assessed value of home or auto
Benefit   $32.25 current tax savings per person
Total Cost   $52,019 in 2009 - not reimbursed by State

   

2. State Mandated Need-Based Program:

 245 Veterans and their surviving spouses

Income 

 At or below $39,500 for married or $32,300 for single 

Exemption 

 $3,000 exemption of assessed value of home or auto

Benefit 

 $64.50 current tax savings per person

Total Cost 

 $15,800 in 2009 - reimbursed by State

 

3. Local Option Need-Based Program:

Who   476 Veterans and their surviving spouses
Income   At or below $49,500 for married and $42,300 for single 
Exemption   $10,000 exemption of assessed value of home or auto
Benefit  $215.00 current tax savings per person
Total Cost   $101,265 in 2009 - not reimbursed by State
